Sierra Soetedjo

Sierra

A few weeks ago I got a phone call from my Boss. Our office wants to do an exclusive interview with Sierra, a newcomer jazz singer.  I was called because he needs me to shoot some exclusive photos of her.  I was reluctant at first because this is the first time I had a photo session with a celebrity, but then he told me I should take a look at her photos first,
and then I did.  After seeing her photos I, without hesitation, said YES!

We did the interview at Bluegrass, it's a recently opened bar in Epicentrum, Kuningan area.   As with all bars, the place was very dark.  I almost cried literally because it was VERY dark, not the ideal place to do a photoshoot.  Some of you might wonder "Why don't you use flash?", well I don't have any flashgun and my camera doesn't have a built in flash, and even though if I have one she asked specifically that I don't use any flash because it'll disturb other customers.  To give you an idea how dark the place is I was only able to shoot at 1/50 shutter speeds, even though I was at f1.2 and ISO 3200.  That was the peak of my camera's ISO performance, time to get a new one I guess (amen).

I was instructed to do some candid shots while my partner did the interview.

She is very nice, and humble too.  As a normal male human being who wouldn't adore her? After the interview, we began the session, and luckily my partner helped with posing.

She asked that I include the bluegrass sign in one of the photos, I instantly have a cold sweat because a have to switch to a slower lens.  The image above was taken at 1/15 f2.8 ISO3200, I took several consecutive shots in case the photos are blurry due to the low shutter speed.

I asked if I can shoot her from behind the bar, she asked the manager and the manager said yes, woohoo!

Cheers!

And that was my favorite shot!  Thanks Sierra! I hope you have a bright career ahead.  And thanks to Chika, Jamie, and Kinoi to lighten up the mood

You can visit Sierra's facebook page and her myspace to listen to some of her songs.

Note:
This photosession is pushing RAW processing and my camera's lowlight capabilities, the photo might seem smooth at these resolution, but if you see the original files it is very grainy because the photos weren't bright enough so I increased exposure +0.5 to +1.0 ev in Lightroom and some selective dodging on several areas.  This session finally made up my mind to upgrade to a better camera.  But I'm at a dilemma right now should I buy the Mark II  now or wait for Mark III next year?
